Poster by Saville Lumley (1915)

The purpose of this image is to get people to join the army and take part in the 'great war' It does this by showing a young girl asking her father 'Daddy, what did you do in the great war?' The poster or image was made in 1915 so we know it was it was a year after the war had started. so its as if the question is asked to guilt you into joining the army.
The father is looking straight at you so its like the question is being directed at you. Its clear the the image is 'for' joining the war as it shows white roses on the curtains and the child playing with his british toy soldiers protecting the queen.
The question 'Daddy, what did you do in the war?' is written in the style and font used in the 'We want you' posters which were also aimed at getting people to join the war. Also in the type it uses the word 'great' which suggests anyone who fought in the war were 'great'.
The potential audience for the image is really for anyone, young men out of jobs, fathers i.e why the image shows a father with his two children.
Its a very powerful advertisement and i think it would help in getting people to join up to the army also the time in which this image was made was before people were forced to join the army so its a very persuasive poster.

Critical studies image analysis exercise:

'The Uncle Sam's Range' 1876
From looking at the image 'The Uncle Sam's Range' its clear that its an advertisement by Americans. for Americans. 'The Uncle Sam's Range' is a cooker company so the advertisement is trying to sell the cooker. The image shows that the year is 1876 which is 100 years after America separated from a british country and became its own. This day is called independence day. They appear to be having a celebration in order for independence day, july 4th. If you look closely at the image you can see what appears to be a bill for the worlds food and America seems to be making a mockery of all the other countries by saying China eats grasshoppers and Ireland only eats potatoes.
The image is definitely 'for' America and seems to be selling the American dream lifestyle as if thats what you get when you buy the cooker. They have servants to serve up their food so it gives the impression that they are rich and that if you buy the cooker you will also have this rich lifestyle.
The image also shows the American flag as a carpet with 'The Uncle Sam's Range' written on it in bold upper case font which looks almost like and American cowboy style. There is also a man with an eagle on his shoulder, the eagle is the symbol of America. It also appears that you can see a building through the window which looks like the white house.
All in all this image is advertising how great America is and makes it seem like its because of the cooker.
